James Ensor, one of the most intriguing and innovative Belgian artists of the late 19th century, left a legacy that transcends time and the boundaries of art.

His works are filled with carnivalesque imagery, masks, skeletons, and grotesque characters, exploring the human subconscious and the social paradoxes of his time. Often satirical, his art challenged conventions and became a cornerstone in the transition to Expressionism, paving the way for later artistic movements such as Surrealism. Ensor exposed the contradictions of human nature, unveiling the hypocrisies of religion and politics in his canvases, while simultaneously creating fantastical worlds of vibrant colors and disturbing figures.

Between October 2024 and January 2025, the city of Antwerp will become the center of a grand celebration of Ensor’s legacy, with four exhibitions showcasing different facets of his work. These shows promise to shed new light on the artist, exploring both his monumental paintings and his work as an illustrator.

Ensor Vitrines: 22 illustrations inspired by the artist's work will be displayed in the iconic shop windows of the city. This urban intervention offers the public an immersive experience while walking through Antwerp’s streets, where Ensor’s art mingles with everyday life, as if his ghostly creations were peeking out from the windows. From 27 September to 2 November, 2024.

In Your Widest Dreams: Ensor Beyond the Impressionism, at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA), is the largest exhibition ever dedicated to James Ensor. With an extensive collection of paintings, engravings, and drawings, this exhibition highlights Ensor's boldness in pushing beyond the boundaries of Impressionism to explore new aesthetic territories. The exhibition offers a comprehensive view of his career, from his early experiments with light to his darker, more expressive visions that marked the evolution of Expressionism. From 28 September 2024 until 19 January 2025.

Expo Masquerade, Ensor and Make-up, at the Fashion Museum (MoMU), delves into the influence of masks and makeup in his work. Ensor, obsessed with disguises, masks, and the theatricality of life, inspired not only visual artists but also contemporary makeup artists. This exhibition examines how the symbolism of his masks continues to resonate in modern artistic practices, highlighting the intersections between visual art and the art of makeup. From 28September 2024 until 02 February, 2025.

Ensor's States of Imagination, at the incredible Museum Plantin-Moretus, focuses on Ensor's role as an illustrator. This exhibition covers a lesser-known phase of his career, where the artist produced engravings and illustrations that reveal his technical skill and the depth of his imagination. The museum, famous for its collection of rare books and prints, is the perfect venue to showcase Ensor's multifaceted talent, highlighting his contribution to the graphic arts. From 28 September 2024 until 19 January 2025.

These four exhibitions in Antwerp provide a unique opportunity to explore the legacy of James Ensor from different perspectives, revealing both his visual genius and his profound influence on culture and the arts.
